Die, Heretic!

A man was walking along San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge when he saw a woman about to jump off. He ran up to her, trying to dissuade her from committing suicide. He told her simply that God loved her. A tear came to her eye.
He then asked her, “Are you a Christian, a Jew, a Hindu, or what?”

“I’m a Christian,” she replied.

He said, “Me, too! Small world! Protestant or Catholic?”

“Protestant.”

“Me, too! What denomination?”

“Baptist.”

“Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?”

“Northern Baptist.”

He remarked, “Well, ME TOO! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”

She answered, “Northern Conservative Baptist.”

He said, “Well, that’s amazing! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist or Northern Conservative Reformed Baptist?”

“Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist.”

“Remarkable! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Eastern Region?”

She told him, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region.”

“A miracle!” he cried. “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?”

She said, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.”

He then shouted, “DIE, HERETIC!”, and pushed her over the rail.

The rails on the Golden Gate Bridge are too low you can lean
over and fall. The police and Bridge authorities admit that they
stop at least one person each week from killing themselves.

But each week someone is successful and dies a horrible death.

Conservatively that means that 100 people a year attempt death
with one tragically dying each week leaving behind devastation

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem
98% of those stopped never try again

The Bridge Directors have voted…but only to study death at the Bridge

Help stop the carnage the rails on the Golden Gate have to be raised now !

Thanks for that, pkh. Although a tad off-base, nonetheless important. Bless you for your genuine concern about the lives of others.

Since I’ve been a Baptist most of my life, I can tell you this story. A speaker eas tracing the origin of Baptists. “Many of you trace the history of Baptist back to the 16th century,” he said. “Some of you trace their beginnings back to the secong chapter of the Book of Acts – others to John the Baptist. I think you’re all wrong,” he said. “I think the Baptist Church was founded in Genesis, chapter 13, where Abraham said to Lot, “You go your way, and I’ll go mine.” – Don Baker, pastor of First Evangelical Free Church in his wonderful book Acceptance: Loosing the Webs of Personal Insecurity.

Well, I don’t know if we can trace the Baptists back to the book of Genesis. But, for sure, the Baptists are not historically a part of the Protestant movement. Although they were persecuted during the Holy Roman Empire, the Baptists are from the Anabaptist movement.

The point of this post is not to encourage denominationalism, rather it is to encourage people to seek God instead of vain traditions.

LOL! I heard this joke before. I can’t remember where though. It is pretty bad though when some people get so caught up in stuff like that.

I do understand the part where you have to AT LEAST be a fundamental baptist. Otherwise you are a heretic. hahaha!

I hope you know I’m kidding. :-)

Shanti, you’re killing me. You kooky astrowombat! Of course, I know you’re kidding. Glad to hear John is confident that his exam went well.

Absolutely, I understand the post is all about unity in Christ, pity we have to make jokes about it to point out the obvious. Hope you’ll realise that the story is a form of Reductio ad absurdum (Latin: “reduction to the absurd”). Another such joke in the same vein was also written by Max Lucado.

I just came back from the Festival of Praise in Singapore and Rev Phil Pringle painted a picture of all 6.5 billion humans in the backseat of one car, sitting together in the same “boat”. Only thing is: God is driving the car while we’re all in the same backseat arguing, fighting, shouting, ignoring, teasing, playing tricks, with/at/on one another like 2-year-olds, while we’re all individually thinking that “I’m right, they’re all wrong!” That really hit home, I’ve gotta admit!

Thanks for sharing, Pericles. Sounds like an awesome Festival. God bless, brother. And thanks for the anecdote. Bless! Bless! Bless!

That joke comes from the tremendously funny comedian Emo Philips.
